Mushrooms turned out to be more than just a hobby for Hunter Vargo. What started with a simple grow kit during quarantine became the beginning of a business that changed the direction of his life.

At 17 years old, Hunter had no fancy equipment or big budget. He learned the basics from YouTube, built a small grow setup with things he found around the house, and started growing enough mushrooms to bring to a local restaurant. That first “yes” gave him the confidence to keep going.

Over time, his mushroom business outgrew his bedroom and moved into a nearby farm, where he traded feeding animals for space to grow. Today, he supplies restaurants and one of the biggest farmers markets in Scranton, but getting there wasn’t easy. From contamination problems to long workdays and constant trial and error, every step taught him something new.

In this episode, Hunter shares what mushroom farming is really like, how he found his first customers, why relationships matter more than fancy marketing, and the lessons he learned by building a business instead of following the path he thought he had to take.

In this video I build an outdoor kitchen .This has been one of my favorite projects so far . I use it all the time and it's a joy to cook on . food always tastes so good outside! I pour a little concrete and build a block grill. I turn an old slab of pine into a nice outdoor counter top, and I cook some really tasty burgers.

Former Army tech Larry Johnson has spent his career improving computer and telephone systems so when he saw inefficiencies in how we grow our food, he decided to create a new system for farming your yard. His EZGro garden uses aquaponics, stacked towers, and custom pots to create a high-density vertical garden (HDVG) on as little land as a deck, rooftop, or parking space.

Johnson says the system will grow 700 plants, using 15 towers, in a space of just 2 by 18 feet. Today, he sells kits ranging from single tower patio gardens to 10-tower deck gardens to commercial-sized set-ups like those being used by a Miami football stadium for concession meals, by a Whole Foods Market in New Jersey, and by rooftop farmers in Lagos, Nigeria.

It all began in 1995 when Johnson began tinkering with his quad pot design, crafting a custom container strong enough to hold tomato plants with over 100 pounds of fruit. He then developed an irrigation system that feeds nutrient-rich water from the top of the towers, drips through the pots, and filters out through tubing below to be reused. This closed-loop system uses less than 10% of the water of a traditional garden.

To create a system robust enough for even off-grid farmers, Johnson has spent the last 2 decades developing his trihelix solar windmill. Solar panels are mounted on top of three turbines, known as the "Tri-Helix", which are twisted like DNA strands to catch even inconsistent wind (turbines start turning in winds of just 2mph).

How to Take a Wild Rose Cutting

In this week by week video I show you a simple method of taking a cutting of a wild rose (Dog rose, Rosa canina).

The cutting can be taken at the end of the year, around October/November time. Choose a branch which contains 'hips', which is a sign that the branch is new growth and will transplant well.

For this, you only need some small pots, a little potting compost and some rooting compound.

Please be careful when taking cuttings of wild roses that:
A, Don't take cuttings of someone owned plant without permission
B, You don't hurt yourself on the thorns

In the early morning, the grandma lights the tandoor and bakes fresh bread while the grandpa prepares to leave.
He walks down to the village, buys simple supplies, and slowly returns home through the mountain paths.
Later, the grandma prepares traditional sweets and continues her daily work in the yard.
Together, they spend the day working, cooking, and living a quiet life away from the modern world.
This is a real story of simple living, far from comfort, but full of meaning.

Veterans buy dirt-cheap land to build off-grid coliving homestead

On 4 acres of inexpensive desert land in Arizona, Kenny Quinn—a veteran turned earth builder—helped create a radically affordable cohousing compound with people he had just met.

Using little money but a lot of ingenuity, they built their homes from the earth itself. With hyperadobe (open-weave bags packed with clay-rich soil), they formed strong, breathable walls, and partially buried the structures to take advantage of the earth’s constant temperature for natural heating and cooling.

The shared home includes simple private rooms, a communal kitchen and bath, and a small sunroom—all built together. Kenny customized his space with earthen floors, preferring to live barefoot and feel the ground beneath him. Together, they installed solar power, hot water, plumbing, water catchment, and even a DIY “renegade” septic system alongside a permitted one.

They also built a round, semi-subterranean guest house inspired by Native American kivas, designed with passive solar principles and outfitted with ultra-efficient appliances sourced just across the Mexican border—affordable and low-energy.

Now that everything is in place, their cost of living is incredibly low: about $200 per year in total bills, thanks to solar energy and captured rainwater.

Their latest project is a large greenhouse, bringing them closer to growing their own food and increasing their self-sufficiency.

While earth building is labor-intensive, Kenny describes it as pure joy—more like building forts than construction.
