Veterans buy dirt-cheap land to build off-grid coliving homestead

On 4 acres of inexpensive desert land in Arizona, Kenny Quinn—a veteran turned earth builder—helped create a radically affordable cohousing compound with people he had just met.

Using little money but a lot of ingenuity, they built their homes from the earth itself. With hyperadobe (open-weave bags packed with clay-rich soil), they formed strong, breathable walls, and partially buried the structures to take advantage of the earth’s constant temperature for natural heating and cooling.

The shared home includes simple private rooms, a communal kitchen and bath, and a small sunroom—all built together. Kenny customized his space with earthen floors, preferring to live barefoot and feel the ground beneath him. Together, they installed solar power, hot water, plumbing, water catchment, and even a DIY “renegade” septic system alongside a permitted one.

They also built a round, semi-subterranean guest house inspired by Native American kivas, designed with passive solar principles and outfitted with ultra-efficient appliances sourced just across the Mexican border—affordable and low-energy.

Now that everything is in place, their cost of living is incredibly low: about $200 per year in total bills, thanks to solar energy and captured rainwater.

Their latest project is a large greenhouse, bringing them closer to growing their own food and increasing their self-sufficiency.

While earth building is labor-intensive, Kenny describes it as pure joy—more like building forts than construction.

Self-Reliant Couple Growing 80% of Their Food on an Incredible Off-Grid Homestead!

Laurie & Dan are growing 80% of their own food on an impressively abundant 3-acre off-grid homestead in the South of England. They grow vegetables and flowers in permaculture gardens, they grow tree fruit, berries and herbs in a food forest, and they grow winter crops in three polytunnels. They also cultivate mushrooms by inoculating logs and forage for chestnuts in the woodland on their property. They use a variety of growing methods including no dig beds, back to eden wood chip mulching, no chemicals or sprays, they plant heirloom seeds, and they make their own compost. Their land is off-grid so they collect rainwater, and they also pump well-water using electricity from solar panels.

To preserve their massive harvests, Dan and Laurie store root vegetables, tubers, pumpkins and squash in a frost-free shed, they process tomatoes into sauces, they make jams and chutneys, they freeze a lot of their extra produce, they dry herbs, and they also make medicinal tinctures.

To supplement the food they grow, they do buy organic grains like oats, rice and flour, and things like oil and chocolate.

In addition to growing tons of food, the couple is also trying to be self-sufficient with their firewood by planting and harvesting fast-growing trees like eucalyptus.

They also hope to become self-reliant with their income from the land by doing things like plant sales, garden tours, and rewilding experiences, but for the moment they do still work part-time offsite as gardeners, and they also earn some income from sharing videos on their Freedom Forest Life and Meranti Music YouTube channels here:

21 Years Living Off-Grid on a Remote Island in a Self-Built Cabin & Homestead

Mark Young has been living a self-sufficient lifestyle on a remote off-grid island in British Columbia for the past 21 years. He has built 9 experimental buildings on his 20-acre property using local and natural materials like wood, stone and cob, including: a cabin for himself, utility buildings for his solar power systems, a sauna and dormitory, and most impressively, a stunning 2,000 square foot dance studio with a sprung dance floor that is built on recycled car tires! He runs events and workshops at his Leviathan Studio – so named because the inside of the structure looks like a whale's ribcage!

Mark's off-grid systems include two solar power setups for electricity (one with lithium batteries, one with lead acid batteries), a micro hydro water wheel, a drilled well, satellite internet, wood stoves with heat exchangers for heat and hot water, rainwater ponds for watering the gardens and for fire protection from wild fires, and outhouses for toilets.

He covers his expenses by teaching dance workshops (primarily contact improv dance), both on an off the island, as well as by selling eggs from his flock of hens, and selling lumber that he mills himself.

His unique building style and experimentation are possible because the island does not have a building inspector to enforce the local building code. But building in this way does present challenges, for example not being able to get different types of insurance.

In addition to building and working, Mark also gardens and grows some fruit and vegetable produce for himself and his guests, he raises chickens for eggs and meat, and then he also orders food from a neighbouring island for the rest of his food needs.

The community on the island is pretty active so Mark is able to play chess and give/provide help to neighbours as needed. He says no matter how self sufficient you want to be, you should always know your neighbours because everybody needs help sometimes.
