On 4 acres of inexpensive desert land in Arizona, Kenny Quinn—a veteran turned earth builder—helped create a radically affordable cohousing compound with people he had just met.

Using little money but a lot of ingenuity, they built their homes from the earth itself. With hyperadobe (open-weave bags packed with clay-rich soil), they formed strong, breathable walls, and partially buried the structures to take advantage of the earth’s constant temperature for natural heating and cooling.

The shared home includes simple private rooms, a communal kitchen and bath, and a small sunroom—all built together. Kenny customized his space with earthen floors, preferring to live barefoot and feel the ground beneath him. Together, they installed solar power, hot water, plumbing, water catchment, and even a DIY “renegade” septic system alongside a permitted one.

They also built a round, semi-subterranean guest house inspired by Native American kivas, designed with passive solar principles and outfitted with ultra-efficient appliances sourced just across the Mexican border—affordable and low-energy.

Now that everything is in place, their cost of living is incredibly low: about $200 per year in total bills, thanks to solar energy and captured rainwater.

Their latest project is a large greenhouse, bringing them closer to growing their own food and increasing their self-sufficiency.

While earth building is labor-intensive, Kenny describes it as pure joy—more like building forts than construction.

— Veterans Off-grid https://www.veteransoffgrid.org/

On *faircompanies: https://faircompanies.com/vide....os/veterans-buy-dirt

What are pasture-raised eggs, and are they really worth the price? In my first ever episode, I visit a local egg farm to uncover the truth about how eggs are made and what separates high-quality eggs from the rest.

Questions you'll get answered:
• How do eggs get from the farm to your table?
• What does "pasture-raised”, “free-range”, or "cage-free" actually mean?
• Does yolk color matter?

Join me as I walk the farm with Chuck, the owner of Prairie Farmstead, and discover everything you've ever wanted to know about eggs!

Be sure to subscribe for future videos like this!
Laurie & Dan are growing 80% of their own food on an impressively abundant 3-acre off-grid homestead in the South of England. They grow vegetables and flowers in permaculture gardens, they grow tree fruit, berries and herbs in a food forest, and they grow winter crops in three polytunnels. They also cultivate mushrooms by inoculating logs and forage for chestnuts in the woodland on their property. They use a variety of growing methods including no dig beds, back to eden wood chip mulching, no chemicals or sprays, they plant heirloom seeds, and they make their own compost. Their land is off-grid so they collect rainwater, and they also pump well-water using electricity from solar panels.

You can follow and find out more about Freedom Forest Life here:
https://www.youtube.com/@freedomforestlife
https://www.instagram.com/freedomforestlife/
https://www.freedomforestlife.co.uk/

And you can check out Dan's new music project, Meranti, here:
https://www.youtube.com/@Rodthemanturner

To preserve their massive harvests, Dan and Laurie store root vegetables, tubers, pumpkins and squash in a frost-free shed, they process tomatoes into sauces, they make jams and chutneys, they freeze a lot of their extra produce, they dry herbs, and they also make medicinal tinctures.

To supplement the food they grow, they do buy organic grains like oats, rice and flour, and things like oil and chocolate.

In addition to growing tons of food, the couple is also trying to be self-sufficient with their firewood by planting and harvesting fast-growing trees like eucalyptus.

They also hope to become self-reliant with their income from the land by doing things like plant sales, garden tours, and rewilding experiences, but for the moment they do still work part-time offsite as gardeners, and they also earn some income from sharing videos on their Freedom Forest Life and Meranti Music YouTube channels here:
https://www.youtube.com/@freedomforestlife
https://www.youtube.com/@Rodthemanturner

Thanks for watching!

-------------------------------------------------------------
STAY IN TOUCH!
-------------------------------------------------------------

Website: www.exploringalternatives.ca
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/exploringalternativesblog
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exploringalternatives/

-------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENTS
-------------------------------------------------------------

We want our channel and comments section to be an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome to watch and contribute.
Mark Young has been living a self-sufficient lifestyle on a remote off-grid island in British Columbia for the past 21 years. He has built 9 experimental buildings on his 20-acre property using local and natural materials like wood, stone and cob, including: a cabin for himself, utility buildings for his solar power systems, a sauna and dormitory, and most impressively, a stunning 2,000 square foot dance studio with a sprung dance floor that is built on recycled car tires! He runs events and workshops at his Leviathan Studio – so named because the inside of the structure looks like a whale's ribcage!

You can find out more about Mark Young and Leviathan Studio here:
https://leviathan.lasqueti.ca/

Mark's off-grid systems include two solar power setups for electricity (one with lithium batteries, one with lead acid batteries), a micro hydro water wheel, a drilled well, satellite internet, wood stoves with heat exchangers for heat and hot water, rainwater ponds for watering the gardens and for fire protection from wild fires, and outhouses for toilets.

He covers his expenses by teaching dance workshops (primarily contact improv dance), both on an off the island, as well as by selling eggs from his flock of hens, and selling lumber that he mills himself.

His unique building style and experimentation are possible because the island does not have a building inspector to enforce the local building code. But building in this way does present challenges, for example not being able to get different types of insurance.

In addition to building and working, Mark also gardens and grows some fruit and vegetable produce for himself and his guests, he raises chickens for eggs and meat, and then he also orders food from a neighbouring island for the rest of his food needs.

The community on the island is pretty active so Mark is able to play chess and give/provide help to neighbours as needed. He says no matter how self sufficient you want to be, you should always know your neighbours because everybody needs help sometimes.

We hope you enjoyed checking out Mark's inspiring off-grid alternative lifestyle!

Thanks for watching!

-------------------------------------------------------------
STAY IN TOUCH!
-------------------------------------------------------------

Website: www.exploringalternatives.ca
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/exploringalternativesblog
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/exploringalternatives/

-------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENTS
-------------------------------------------------------------

We want our channel and comments section to be an inclusive space where everyone feels welcome to watch and contribute.
#farming2026 #smallfarmprofits #specialtycrops #forbiddenroots
Most farmers were taught the same rule:
scale up, plant more acres, spread the risk.

In 2026, that rule is destroying farms.

Across America, operations with perfect crops are losing their operating lines mid-season—not because of yield, not because of mismanagement, but because cash shows up too late.

At the same time, a small group of growers is doing something that looks insane on paper:
they’re shrinking on purpose.

Less land.
Fewer acres.
And somehow… more money.

This video breaks down the real numbers behind six specialty crops that generate six-figure income from less than one acre—crops that exist completely outside the commodity system.

You’ll see:
• Why good harvests no longer guarantee survival
• How banks actually underwrite farms in 2026
• Why “get big or get out” quietly erased high-value crops
• Six documented crops that outperform 600-acre operations
• How small growers bypass commodity pricing entirely

This isn’t theory.
It’s math.
And it explains why some farms are disappearing while others are quietly thriving.

Welcome to Nature's Hidden Archive.
#saffronfarming #ginseng #microgreens #wasabi
#farmfinance #agricultureeconomics #farmbankruptcy
#regenerativeagriculture #smallacresbigprofits
#farmlife #modernfarming #bigag #growfoodathome

If you've been putting off starting your homestead, 2026 might be the perfect storm of opportunity you've been waiting for. In this video, I break down 5 concrete reasons why the timing has never been better to start an off-grid homestead on a budget - and why waiting might mean missing out.

Download My Books For Whatever You Want To Pay, Even If What You Want To Pay Is Nothing:
Off Grid On A Shoestring Budget:
https://7kin-homestead.kit.com..../products/off-grid-o
Out Of Your Own Way:
https://7kin-homestead.kit.com..../products/e-book-you

⏱ TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 - Intro
0:58 - Financially Sustainable Lifestyle
3:49 - An Effective Form Of Protest
8:36 - Life On A Cattle Ranch
10:47 - A Hedge Against Uncertainty
13:17 - The Problem With Your Problems
16:04 - Taking Care Of Business

We started our homestead with basically nothing - no trust fund, no experience, just a decision to make it happen. And if we can build a thriving off-grid homestead on a budget, you absolutely can too. The barriers to entry have never been lower. Solar systems that cost $30,000 ten years ago? Now under $3,000. Rural land is still affordable while urban real estate has skyrocketed. The homesteading community is exploding with free knowledge, tool sharing, and support. And the math has shifted - when grocery prices jump 25%, your garden isn't just a hobby, it's a financial strategy. 💬 What's the FIRST step you're taking in 2026?
When the collapse lasts years—not months—the only people still eating are those who planted perennials. Not annuals you replant every spring. Perennials that produce food for 20+ years with zero maintenance.
Most survival gardeners waste time on tomatoes and beans like it's a hobby. But perennials are survival infrastructure.

Plant once, harvest for decades. No reseeding. No tilling. No dependency on supply chains that won't exist.
This video breaks down the 10 most critical perennial crops for long-term food security—chosen because they survive neglect, produce serious calories or nutrition, and work in growing zones 3-7 (most of North America):

→ #10: Siberian Pea Shrub (nitrogen-fixing protein source for 50+ years)
→ #9: Sea Kale (three vegetables in one perennial plant)
→ #8: Jerusalem Artichoke (perennial potato producing 5-10 lbs per plant) → #7: Asparagus (20 years of spring harvests from one planting)
→ #6: Rhubarb (indestructible cold-hardy perennial + natural mulch)
→ #5: Chives (flavor, nutrition, immune support forever)
→ #4: Perennial Kale (year-round greens for 5-10 years)
→ #3: Good King Henry (out-produces annual spinach, never bolts)
→ #2: Egyptian Walking Onions (self-propagating, never needs replanting)
→ #1: American Groundnut (native perennial with 15-17% protein)

These aren't garden decorations—they're permanent food systems. When seed companies sell out, nurseries close, and fertilizer disappears, these crops keep producing. But perennials take 2-3 years to establish. If you wait until collapse is obvious, you're already too late.

The time to plant is now—while you can still get crowns, cuttings, and tubers. In three years, when everyone else is desperate for seeds that don't exist, you'll already be harvesting.

#perennialvegetables #survivalfood #foodsecurity #permaculture #homesteading

Sources:
USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map & Growing Guide https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/ (Official USDA resource for plant hardiness zones and perennial crop viability)
Cornell University Cooperative Extension - Perennial Vegetable Gardening https://cceonondaga.org/resour....ces/perennial-vegeta (Research-backed guide on establishing and maintaining perennial food crops)
Mother Earth News - Perennial Vegetables for Year-Round Harvest https://www.motherearthnews.co....m/organic-gardening/ (Comprehensive resource on perennial crop cultivation and long-term food production)
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service - Native Edible Plants https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/cons....ervation-basics/natu (Government documentation on native perennial food crops including American groundnut)
Penn State Extension - Asparagus Production Guide https://extension.psu.edu/asparagus-production (Academic research on perennial crop establishment, maintenance, and long-term yields)

⚠️ Disclaimer:
This video is for educational and entertainment purposes only.
High in the green mountains of northern Vietnam, one woman is quietly building a world of her own. This is Nhât’s home, part workshop, part farm, part dream. Here, concrete meets craftsmanship, and every corner tells a story. From the moment you arrive, it feels alive.

Nothing here comes from a factory. Every wall, fence, and roof is the result of patience and ingenuity. Nhât bends bamboo like steel, turns soil into structure, and transforms scraps into design.

Oh, and she has a pool. Yes. An amazing pool where she can rest after such a hard period of work.

My Bushcraft / Nhất
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channe....l/UCYeuTQYoWVPSOQBeo

Disclaimer: Quantum Tech HD is not affiliated with the businesses whose products are shown in this review.
