During World War II, America learned a hard lesson about the strategic importance of the small island nations scattered across the Pacific.

Among them is Palau, a nation of just 18,000 people in what’s known as the second island chain. It’s home to the bloodiest battlefield of the Pacific theater, on the island of Peleliu.

Today, as the Chinese regime prepares for a possible invasion of Taiwan, Palau finds itself on the front lines again. It's one of only 12 countries that diplomatically recognize Taiwan, and one of only three with a Compact of Free Association with the United States—an agreement that gives the U.S. exclusive military access to Palauan waters in exchange for providing defense, postal service, economic assistance, and other benefits to Palauans.

Palau’s strategic position has made it a target. The Chinese Communist Party has ramped up gray-zone tactics and information warfare across the region to pull small Pacific nations away from Taiwan and the United States.

In this episode, I’m sitting down with the President of Palau Surangel Whipps Jr. Half-American and half-Palauan and born in Baltimore, Whipps decided to give up his American citizenship to serve as President of his father’s homeland and chart a new course for its development.

In this episode, Whipps explains how Palau is defending its sovereignty against foreign encroachment and shares his vision for the country's future.

We cover: How has the CCP threatened Palau? How does the Compact of Free Association shape U.S. regional defense strategy? Why is the U.S. military building radar sites on the island? And how can Western private sector investment help secure a free Indo-Pacific?

In “Top Secret America,” Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dana Priest investigated the growth of a massive maze of clandestine government and private agencies aimed at fighting terrorism after the 9/11 attacks.

Those secret efforts, she and her team reported, included a covert international war waged by the CIA that included drone strikes, black site prisons, and “enhanced interrogation techniques” widely criticized as torture; a domestic surveillance program that authorized the NSA to intercept certain telephone calls and emails of American citizens without a warrant; and other anti-terror programs.

The documentary shed new light on the nature, scale and scope of the government’s counter-terror operations after 9/11 — and explored mounting questions about those programs’ effectiveness.

“Top Secret America” was directed by Michael Kirk. It was written by Michael Kirk and Mike Wiser, and produced by Michael Kirk, Mike Wiser and Jim Gilmore. It was reported by Dana Priest, Jim Gilmore and William Arkin. The executive producer of FRONTLINE was David Fanning.

In “The Dark Side,” which aired in 2006, FRONTLINE investigated the internal war that was waged between the intelligence community and former Vice President Dick Cheney after the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Just after the attacks, Cheney told Americans: “A lot of what needs to be done here will have to be done quietly, without any discussion, using sources and methods that are available to our intelligence agencies.”. He warned the public that the government would have to operate on the “dark side.”

This documentary detailed the vice president’s role as the chief architect of the war on terror, and his battle with former Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet for control of the “dark side.” After 9/11, both leaders acted fast to prepare the U.S. for a new kind of war. But soon a debate grew over the goals of the war on terror, and the decision to go to war in Iraq.

Drawing on more than 40 interviews and thousands of documents, this film provided a step-by-step examination of what happened inside the councils of war at that time.

Cheney died on Nov. 3, 2025, at age 84.

On July 1st, 2026, President Trump climbed the stairs of a Boeing 747-8 that no American president had ever flown — a jet that, eighteen months earlier, belonged to Qatar's royal family.
