The US military successfully intercepted an Iranian “surprise attack” on US forces in the Middle East, US Central Command announced tonight.

“At 5:45 p.m. ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on US forces based in the Middle East,” CENTCOM said in a post to social media. “All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today he spoke with US President Donald Trump about Kyiv’s access to Patriot missile interceptors and reviving diplomacy during a “good meeting” at the White House.

The meeting came after Iranian officials ramped up threats toward Kyiv after last weekend’s attack by Ukraine on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.

People trapped inside Japan shopping centre after earthquake | BBC News

Several people are trapped inside a shopping centre after a strong earthquake hit south-west Japan, officials say.

Some local media reports that there was an explosion at the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto, following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake.

The quake hit inland on Kyushu island at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT), with more than 150,000 people being told to move to evacuation shelters. There was a brief tsunami warning that was lifted within the hour.

Emergency services said "many people" were trapped inside the Aeon Mall in the Kumamoto region.

Pastor Jin was arrested in October, amid China's largest swathe of arrests targeting Christians for decades. He says the conditions he experienced in detention were "incredibly tough", and he "could never have imagined" the circumstances around how he was eventually freed.

Jin is a Chinese citizen, but Donald Trump personally raised his case with Xi Jinping in Beijing in May. While securing his release appears to be a diplomatic coup, the Trump administration's total silence on the case raises questions about what concessions China might be seeking in return.
