WHY I MADE A FILM ABOUT HAIRDRESSERS

As a filmmaker, my roots are completely linked to horror. Growing up, my mother always had the horror channels on: Syfy, Chiller, FearNet. My two favorite trilogies growing up were the Spider-Man trilogy and the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy directed by Sam Raimi and Gore Verbinski respectively. Both are well-respected horror filmmakers in the industry with their hits Evil Dead and The Ring (American Adaptation). My last short was a psychological horror film about a girl in an abusive relationship. So, why did I jump to this?

In 2015, I was with my mother at my sister’s dance class. My mother had befriended Renee, the guardian of Maura’s best friend in the class. I had been sitting there, and she asked me about my films. We began discussing that, and she told me that she had an idea for one: two hair salon owners and the craziness that happens during the day. She told me that she either wanted to turn it into a play or a movie. She even made the joke that I would make it one day. I completely put the idea aside due to the fact that I was deep within the making of my other short, The Distinguished. Recently, Renee’s husband Larry passed away.

One night, I had a dream that I walked into the set of this film. I woke up extremely confused. Why am I remembering this idea now? And similar to other ideas that I have turned into films, this idea stuck with me. For some reason, it just felt like the next project that I should jump on. It would also be awesome for Renee to get her idea finally turned into something special. So, I texted Gretchen and Marusia asking them if they would be the two aforementioned leads in the short due to their longtime friendship, and they almost immediately accepted the roles. I began to heavily work with Gretchen and began to put together something based on all completely true stories.

I also decided to dedicate the film to Gretchen’s father Michael who had passed back in Spring of 2016. She worked extremely hard on the film as both a producer and a lead actress. I have yet to make it up to Marusia, but I’m sure that the time will present itself in the future.

I hope that you all enjoy the film! We worked extremely hard on it and are extremely proud of it.
