In April, alleged Pakistani terrorists attacked the tourist town of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir, killing 26 civilians. The attack resulted in a four-day war between the two South Asian powers in May. Now, New Delhi finds itself in a different kind of conflict, as U.S. President Donald Trump escalates his trade war. As of July 31, India is now facing a base U.S. tariff rate of 25 percent, in addition to 100 percent secondary sanctions for its trade with Russia and a possible further tariff on BRICS members. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi built a warm personal relationship with Trump during their first terms, but will that be enough to help India weather this latest economic blizzard? And what does this mean for India’s historically chilly relationship with its neighbor China? In this episode, two visiting Indian scholars help us make sense of the latest economic figures and their country’s political relationships with the United States, China and Taiwan.
