Transnistria, aka Pridnestrovie. The most famous country in the world that doesn’t actually exist.

It’s a Russian speaking breakaway region in Moldova, sandwiched right next to Ukraine. It’s a bizarre region that exists almost like a time capsule: everywhere you go there, you see signs of its past in the Soviet Union. Nowadays, you’ll also see a lot of Russian flags flying everywhere. You could easily be confused into thinking that you were actually IN Russia, and that’s no coincidence.

Transnistria would love to rejoin Russia. And that made the region a bit dangerous for me to visit; after all, I was the “American spy” who was imprisoned in far eastern Siberia last year. Although Transnistria isn’t directly controlled by Russia, they DO have Russian soldiers and secret police walking around everywhere. And that was enough to make me just a bit nervous.

Join me on this bizarre foray into a Russian breakaway state that Russia doesn’t recognize. Hopefully we can avoid another interrogation..
