We are learning more this week after the announcement that Gadi Eisenkot, the man who ran as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s main opponent in last month’s election, will get the first opportunity to form a new government. This announcement came on Saturday from the nation’s president, Isaac Herzog. LiveNOW’s Austin Westfall is speaking with Prof. Alon Burstein from the @Israel-Palestine-Report as the world of politics begins to wonder how President Donald Trump might react to the news that Israel could have a new leader.

Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, has pitched a unity government between his party and Eisenkot’s supporters. In a video he released prior to Herzog’s announcement, the prime minister tried to prevent his rival from making a deal that would bring one of the Arab-led parties, which had strong showings in the elections, into the government.
