The White House has just announced that Vladimir Putin has agreed to hold talks with Zelenskyy. The frantic diplomacy over the past few days saw U.S. pressure for a quick ceasefire in Ukraine replaced by suggestions of a land-for-peace swap.

European and other allies of Ukraine held a virtual conference to sum up this week’s summitry, which saw Donald Trump roll out a red carpet for Vladimir Putin in Alaska. This was followed by meetings with President Zelenskyy and some European leaders on Monday.

A key objective for European leaders during Monday’s summit with Donald Trump was to prevent another confrontation between U.S. president and Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. In this they succeeded, with the Ukrainian leader playing his cards wisely.
