It’s a conflict with deep colonial roots, and once again, it’s turned violent. Thailand and Cambodia have long disputed territory on their border—a line drawn by French occupation. Tensions have flared before—but this latest violence is among the worst in years. It comes at a time of political upheaval in Thailand. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been suspended by the Constitutional Court—accused of breaching ministerial ethics after a leaked phone call with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen. So, what’s behind the latest flashpoint—and is there a risk of a bigger conflict?
